The Impostor Syndrome and How to Deal with It.

15 de July, 2018

“I do not deserve any of this.
I do not deserve to be in position X and earn salary Y.
I do not deserve to travel so much. Have autonomy. Be ahead of a business this size. Etc etc.
Must be luck that brought me here.
This will all be over soon. “

Who has never asked himself this in times of success or happiness?

Well, you’re not alone.
7 out of 10 people have passed (or go through) the “Fraud Syndrome”.
It is that mental mechanism that renders you incapable of internalizing your conquests, although there is evidence for them.
I’m definitely in that 70%. There are times that I can feel that.

Then I stop and think:
– Do I travel a lot? Yes but I will spend only 4 of the next 30 days at home. Practically to make my bag.
– Do I have autonomy? I can not even remember a weekend I did not work. And how many dinners I had to interrupt to enter a conference call?
– Do I have responsibility? Okay, but I’m getting my first white hair due to the stress of certain situations.

We all have reason to be where we are.
Think hard about how hard you worked to get here, and you will see that this “impostor” already leaves your life.
You deserve every bit of it, and what you will get in the future will be commensurate with the effort you will put forth to achieve it.

And you, how do you deal with those thoughts?
